 Polio Survivor Story

With guest speakers Robin Fujikawa and Linda Fujikawa

October 24th marks World Polio Day which happens to be Jonas Salk’s birthday - the man who discovered the vaccine against the virus that causes the crippling disease of polio. Rotary encourages clubs to hold events on or near World Polio Day.

Robin Fujikawa and Linda Fujiwaka will be invited speaker of Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset for October 21. Robin contracted polio at the age of four during its worldwide pandemic when the USA saw huge yearly increases (e.g., 545% in Alaska). Robin retired from KCC as a professor of Philosophy and religious studies and he loves baking. Robin will describe first-hand effects of total paralysis on a child’s life caused by Polio. His wife Prof. Linda Fujikawa (also retired from KCC) will also join us to share her experiences. Both Linda and Robin are highly regarded by their colleagues, embraced by their neighbors, and loved and admired by their huge family.
