Aloha my fellow Rotarians,

We have so many new people who joined our club this year! This is so exciting! However, with our busy speaker program each week, it is challenging to get know each other and catch up! That's why, we have a special Social Night meeting on Thursday, June 3rd. Let's have some fun, fellowship and enjoy the great food at the Waikiki Yacht Club!

UPCOMING SOCIAL NIGHT - June 3rd

Thursday, June 3rd, from 6 - 7:30 pm at the Waikiki Yacht Club. Feel free to arrive earlier!
It will be a simple social dinner night! Just fellowship and fun! No speaker is scheduled for this meeting.

RECAP OF LAST WEEK'S MEETING - May 20th

Last week's speaker was Ed Futa, former General Secretary and Chief Operating Officer of Rotary Intern

ational and the Rotary Foundation. He spoke about Rotary's special relationship with the United Nations.

Ed explained that Rotarians from the Rotary Club of San Francisco helped draft the United Nations charter. Rotary International has been given premier representative status in the UN, the highest honor given to any non-governmental organization.

It was Rotary's creation of the PolioPlus program in the mid-1980's that brought Rotary's relationship with the United Nations into full fruition. RI has five representatives at the UN. They are fully credentialed to sit on committees and subcommittees. For example, Ed sat in on the committee that established the UN's sustainable development goals, to make sure that the UN's goals are in sync with Rotary's areas of focus.

Annually, the UN holds a Rotary Day in November after the meeting of the General Assembly, to celebrate the close partnership between Rotary and the UN. Approximately 1,800 to 2,000 Rotarians and guests usually attend.

Ed also explained that Rotary's 36,000 clubs, which translate UN ideals into actionable programs, are key to the relationship between Rotary and the UN. Philosophizing and setting goals means nothing without action. Rotary Clubs, and Rotarians work in the communities where they live. Just like the UN, Rotary is global. Rotary Clubs are members of a global organization.

UPCOMING MEETING - May 27th

This week's speaker will be Erica Nakanishi-Stanis,

Study Tour Director at the Pacific & Asian Affairs Council (PAAC) and an adjunct lecturer at the University of Hawaii at Hilo's College of Hawaiian Language, where she teaches a course on global and local sustainability issues. She previously worked as a Communications Coordinator aboard the Peace Boat, a Japan-based NGO. Through Peace Boat, Erica sailed around the world three times, interpreting and chaperoning tours focused on sociopolitical, historic, and economic affairs in each country. Her prior experience also includes working at the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations in Tokyo and the Chiba City International Association where she worked to support migrant communities in Japan. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a BA in Anthropology.

Erica will be speaking live at the Waikiki Yacht Club.

Women In Need Service Project

On Saturday, May 22, Honolulu Sunset Rotarians visited the Women in Need home in Aiea, to deliver items purchased with funds from a District Grant, and clothing from our recent clothing drive.

This event is open to all Rotary members and participants from 12-16 June 2021. Registration fees are as follows:

Breakout sessions are an opportunity to explore the topics that interest you. Polish your leadership skills and get inspired with new ideas for projects, fundraising, strengthening membership, and more.

COVID-19 spirals out of control in Nepal: Every emergency room is full now

District 5000 is collecting donations via the District 5000 Foundation to purchase needed supplies and equipment for Dhading Hospital in Nepal. The situation is serious and we have contacts to ensure the items sent are being put to proper us.
