LAST WEEK'S MEETING -
DECEMBER 3rd

Our speakers last week were Sterling Yee and Jay Andrews from Oceanit. Sterling explained that Oceanit is a research and development company with its main office in Honolulu. It also has offices in San Francisco, Houston, and Washington, D.C.

Oceanit was founded in 1985. It has approximately 200 employees. Roughly half of its staff are PhDs. It is a "mind-to-market" company, with a culture that instills innovation in its employees. It does three types of projects: those that are interesting, those that are challenging, and those that are disruptive, with the chance to really change the world.

It operates in five areas: energy, aerospace, engineering consulting, life sciences, and information systems.

Jay told us about his current project, called ASSURE-19, which is a rapid saliva test for diagnosing COVID-19. He said that the company is only a few days away from submitting a request for Emergency Use Authorization for the test.

The goal is for the test to be inexpensive enough for people to test for days after exposure, and accurate enough to detect disease as soon as people are infectious, but before they show symptoms. This test is 95% accurate. It is not as sensitive as the PCR test, but could produce results in only a few minutes.

They are also working on an Aloha protocol, to enable everybody to take a test upon arrival at the airport, and test every day for five days. So long as people continue to have negative results, they would not need to quarantine. Another objective is to be able to create "bubbles" of people who test negative.

ROTARY MOMENT

December is Disease Prevention and Treatment month in Rotary.

We have all heard about Rotary’s role in the worldwide eradication of polio, to date its largest single program.

But disease prevention and treatment does not begin and end with polio.

How many people are aware that there is an action group—the Health Education and Wellness Rotary Action Group, dedicated to that?

The goal of the Health Education and Wellness Rotary Action Group is to promote good health and wellness through healthy lifestyle choices and disease prevention.

The emphasis is on building awareness, promoting education, and providing information to help achieve and maintain good health and to utilize effective prevention in an integrated way.

It sponsors projects all over the world. From its most recent newsletter, the articles include:

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

“This life is what you make it. No matter what, you're going to mess up sometimes, it's a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you're going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends - they'll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything - they're your true best friends. Don't let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they'll come and go too. And baby, I hate to say it, most of them - actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can't give up because if you give up, you'll never find your soulmate. You'll never find that half who makes you whole and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn't mean you're gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don't, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life's a beautiful thing and there's so much to smile about.”

NEPAL PROJECTS

by Arjun Aryal

Currently, there are three active projects in Nepal. One from the last year that has been approved and fully funded (GG1988399). Two of them (GG2117300 – Hospital equipment and GG2118290-Education focus) are almost ready to be submitted. These two projects will be sponsored by D5000 and will receive roll-over DDF from DG Naomi.

1.      GG1988399 - Chunder Drinking Water Project (RCHS)$75K (Year 2019 -20)

Fourteen D5000 contributing club payments, D5000 cash contributions (earthquake relief fund) and the local host club in Nepal already made the payments and all the contribution was sent to the TRF grant management center, Chicago. This grant will provide clean drinking water to 120 families who now have to hike over 4 hours to fetch drinking water.

2.      GG2117300 - Dhading Hospital medical equipment and training (RCHS)

This Global Grant will provide Emergency Room and ICU equipment (ventilator, ultrasound, and other related equipment) to Dhading hospital. The hospital serves over 250k people of this remote Dhading district and 45+ Health posts and health centers feed into this hospital. This is the only hospital designated by the Government of Nepal to manage Covid-19 in this district but it has no proper equipment. Dr. Paul Maroz communicated with the hospital and verified the need and ensured that the hospital has expertise to use the equipment. Estimated budget is $60k

3.      GG2118290 - Improving Basic Education in Nepal (D5000 sponsored)

This is a centerpiece of D5000 international service project sponsored by DG Naomi. This project will supply science lab equipment to promote career-focused high-school education and provide teachers training and adult science literacy. The focus is on so-called lower caste or untouchable children and seeks to empower them through basic education. D5000 Rotarians will have the opportunity to visit the schools and be involved in the project, tentatively in Oct 2021, assuming the situation will be improved). Estimated budget is $45k.
