PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Aloha my fellow members,

Hope you all had a great holiday weekend! I had a great relaxing time enjoying lots of food and movies. I feel rested and recovered after built up tiredness and now ready to move forward! We have a lot of activities and events coming up in the next few weeks!

One of them is our Club's 25th Anniversary Celebration event which will be on Thursday, December 17th! Check out the details below and register for this Zoom event! You can't miss this event!

Tomorrow, Monday,  November 30 is the end of our online silent auction in support of our local & global service projects. Last time to make a bid on items! Don't lose you chance and check it out! If can, share this link with your friends, family members and coworkers! https://www.32auctions.com/RCHS2020

Lastly, I was so inspired and impressed by our last meeting's speaker, Robbie Leung, and the story she shared about her service project in the Philippines (read the recap below), so I met up with Robbie this past Saturday!
We had a great conversation and she truly amazed me with her enthusiasm and the important work that she did in the Philippines! Robbie presented me and our club with a special gift, a banner of the Rotary Club of Mandaue East which is located in Mandaue City.

Mahalo,
Ary Radnaeva
2020 - 2021 President of the RCHS

LAST WEEK'S MEETING -
NOVEMBER 19

Our speaker  was Robbieana Leung, returned Peace Corps Volunteer. Robbieana shared about her service projects of developing libraries and writing the first Bisaya-English children's book in Moalboal, Philippines, where she served for 28 months (2016 - 18). In the Filipino province, libraries are non-existent and most schools do not have books, so when Robbieana challenged her students to write a children's book to meet this need, they were horrified, crying, "But we've never even seen a children's book and don't even own one book...it's impossible!"

However, nine months of writing and art workshops later, the 24 student-authors invested thousands of hours to produce 20 story drafts and hundreds of illustrations to create the first Bisaya-English children's book, Moalboal Tales: Stories for Dreamers / Sugilanong Moalboalanon: Mga Istorya sa Mga Nangandoy.

Through Obama's Let Girls Learn Grant, they wrote and illustrated the first children's book they ever owned, published the first book in their town, hosted the first storytelling workshop in town and gave away 1,000 copies of their book for free to first time recipients in the Philippines and over 20 countries.

If you weren't able to join this meeting, check out this link for the recording of our Zoom meeting and Robbie's presentation. It was incredible!

If you would like to support this impactful project and the youth, you can do it by purchasing a book ($30) via Venmo: @Robbieana_Leung; or mailing a check to Robbieana Leung, 555 South Street #1305, Hon, HI 96813. All proceeds will go to support creating a documentary film, mailing books in US and Philippines, publishing the book and get it into bookshelves. "This is our passion and purpose project, so money is not for personal profit, but to forward our mission, tell our story and promote Bisaya-English literature!" , shared Robbie.

If you would like to help in any other way such as providing resources or relevant connections, please reach out to Robbie over email at MoalboalTales@gmail.com

RECAP OF THE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT IN NOVEMBER

SHOPPING WITH HUGS  FAMILIES
(Rotarian Project Lead – Glen Bailey)

Every year our Club provides support to HUGS families. HUGS supports Hawaii's families with a child up to age 21 who has been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness or disease. This holiday shopping event gives an opportunity to HUGS families to shop for personal items at Walmart  as these families face financial hardships of caring for a seriously ill child.

Last Sunday, November 22 our Club treated a few of HUGS families to a special shopping experience! All of the families were so grateful and one family shared the following message:

We had the best time shopping and being a part of the HUGS family during this event! Had an enormous amount of goodies and we are truly grateful and THANKFUL for this opportunity! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Kingston had a GIANT smile when he was able to get his game, it was the last one on the shelf! Just an amazing day!

Thanks so much to all volunteers from our Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset and Rotaract Club at the University of Hawaii at Manoa! We appreciate your time!

ROTARY MOMENT

Did you know that there is a Rotary International website for Rotary members?

By registering, you can make online donations to the Rotary Foundation, sign up for the Rotary International Convention, and learn about Rotary. You can also access information about our club and our district, and get a copy of your donation history for the Rotary Foundation.

For example, the page for new members includes the following topics:
  • Welcome to Rotary!
  • How do I start?
  • How can I meet other Rotarians?
  • Resources and Reference
  • Professional Print Resources
  • Tools
  • Rotary Support
It contains links to other documents and information, not to overwhelm, but to help people get started in their Rotary journey.

And that is just one of the many sections you can access once you register. Another thing is Rotary Global Rewards, a discount program for Rotarians, with offerings from businesses. You can get a 20% discount off a Zoom Pro account, for instance, through it.

How to register?

On your computer, type my.rotary.orgIn the upper right hand corner of the page, there will be a link that says “register.” Click it. You only need a few pieces of information from then on.
  • Your name.
  • Your email address.
  • Your club name and number (Honolulu Sunset--31173)
  • Your District number (5000)
  • Your Rotary ID number (a unique number assigned to every member when they join Rotary—it’s on the address label of your Rotarian magazine—but if you don’t have that handy, ask Ary or Liz and we can get it for you).
Once you register, the web page is personalized for you.
Check out the menu at http://www.himalayankitchenhawaii.comTo order take-out order, please call at 808-735-1122. Don't forget to mention "ROTARY" and email a photo of the receipt at rotaryhonolulusunset@gmail.com. By ordering food at Himalayan Kitchen, you are not only supporting the restaurant, but also our Nepal Global Grants for this Rotary year! See more information below.

NEPAL PROJECTS

by Arjun Aryal

Currently, there are three active projects in Nepal. One from the last year that has been approved and fully funded (GG1988399). Two of them (GG2117300 – Hospital equipment and GG2118290-Education focus) are almost ready to be submitted. These two projects will be sponsored by D5000 and will receive roll-over DDF from DG Naomi.

1.      GG1988399 - Chunder Drinking Water Project (RCHS)$75K (Year 2019 -20)

Fourteen D5000 contributing club payments, D5000 cash contributions (earthquake relief fund) and the local host club in Nepal already made the payments and all the contribution was sent to the TRF grant management center, Chicago. This grant will provide clean drinking water to 120 families who now have to hike over 4 hours to fetch drinking water.

2.      GG2117300 - Dhading Hospital medical equipment and training (RCHS)

This Global Grant will provide Emergency Room and ICU equipment (ventilator, ultrasound, and other related equipment) to Dhading hospital. The hospital serves over 250k people of this remote Dhading district and 45+ Health posts and health centers feed into this hospital. This is the only hospital designated by the Government of Nepal to manage Covid-19 in this district but it has no proper equipment. Dr. Paul Maroz communicated with the hospital and verified the need and ensured that the hospital has expertise to use the equipment. Estimated budget is $60k

3.      GG2118290 - Improving Basic Education in Nepal (D5000 sponsored)

This is a centerpiece of D5000 international service project sponsored by DG Naomi. This project will supply science lab equipment to promote career-focused high-school education and provide teachers training and adult science literacy. The focus is on so-called lower caste or untouchable children and seeks to empower them through basic education. D5000 Rotarians will have the opportunity to visit the schools and be involved in the project, tentatively in Oct 2021, assuming the situation will be improved). Estimated budget is $45k.
